Carcassing Timber

Carcassing is normally used to refer to timbers processed for use in structural applications, for example roof battens, floor joists and studwork for partitioned walls. Carcassing timbers are usually machined to specific sizes, and pressure treated according to their planned usage within a building. Navigation Supply stock a wide range and large quantities of carcassing timbers from 19mm x 38mm battens to 100mm x 200mm structural timber sections.

Plywood

Plywood is a manufactured wood panel made from thin sheets of wood veneer. It is one of the most widely used wood products and is flexible, relatively inexpensive, and re-usable. Plywood is used instead of plain wood because of plywood's resistance to cracking, shrinkage, splitting, and twisting/warping, and because of its generally high strength.

Plywood layers (called veneers) are glued together, with adjacent plies having their wood grain at right angles to each other, to form a composite material. This alternation of the grain is called cross-graining and has several important benefits: it reduces the tendency of wood to split when nailed at the edges; it reduces expansion and shrinkage, providing improved dimensional stability and it makes the strength of the panel consistent across both directions. There is usually an odd number of plies, so that the sheet is balanced—this reduces warping. Because plywood is bonded with grains running against one another and with an odd number of composite parts, it is very hard to bend it perpendicular to the grain direction. There are multiple types of plywood available, some more suitable than others for the job in hand; so why not pop in to discuss your requirements, or call a member of our friendly team for help and advice.

MDF

MDF is an engineered wood product formed by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is a very smooth, high quality board with an equal density across all of the panel. It is easily machinable and has no 'natural defects' such as knots as seen in other panel products.

MDF can be used for furniture, panelling, shop fitting, exhibition displays & toys.
